Trequanda is a small medieval village perched in the hills of the Val di Chiana. Recently, the country has not only been included in the national register of historic rural landscapes but has also been awarded the Touring Club’s prestigious Orange Flag.
Access to the medieval village is through two gates that have been preserved over the years: Porta al Sole, which overlooks the Sienese countryside, and Porta al Leccio, which instead observes the woods. The hub of town life is Garibaldi Square where the Romanesque-style church of Saints Peter and Andrew can be visited. The interior houses valuable works including an urn containing the remains of Blessed Bonizzella Cacciaconti, a figure who lived between 1230 and 1300 to whom some extraordinary events and various prodigies are attributed. From Piazza Garibaldi it is easy to reach the Rocca di Trequanda also known as the Cacciaconti Castle of which little remains of the original construction but which retains its grandeur. Not far from the historic center, we find the Windmill Tower, a very distinctive building consisting of three floors connected by a spiral staircase.
